Our staff is
never gets annoyed answering questions. However, for the sake
of better supporting customers, we've compiled a small list
of commonly asked questions and answers.
Q: Why can't I telnet into my server? What is SSH?
A: Telnet is
an antiquated protocol, passing data from one computer to another
without encryption. Because you must login with a password to
our
servers, we feel it's best for your security if you use some sort
of encryption. SSH is similar to Telnet, except that everything
is encrypted. This immensely reduces chances of malicious server
abuse.
Q: I want to run my own log analysis tool. Where
are my logs?
A: Look inside
your home folder. The contents of a folder titled "logs" should
look like this:
 |
Your folder should
look like this, only with your site's name instead of "tobinhosting.com". |
Logs without numbers are current and live. Logs with numbers are
archived (year.month.date). Error logs follow the same format (in
this case they would be titled "tobinhosting.com-error_log", "tobinhosting.com-error_log.20030502",
etc.).
Q: What is your SMTP server?
A: Like most
web hosts, we do not provide SMTP servers for our e-mail accounts.
We do this simply because we're not best suited for the job.
By using your internet service provider's SMTP server you will
get better speeds and more security.
Q: What's my
login for webmail?
A: Your login
for webmail is your user name. For instance, if your e-mail is
bob@domain.com, your login is simply "bob". Have
a question that wasn't covered? It's possible it hasn't been
asked yet.
